Ways To Become Pregnant

These days, having a baby is not limited to sexual activity. There are other ways to conceive including:

  • In vitro fertilization
  • Surrogate and Gestational methods
  • Artificial Insemination and Egg donation

Many people have become parents using non-traditional methods. There are many reasons for this which include:

  • Infertile mother
  • Infertile father
  • Single-parent
  • Homosexual relationship
  • Medical problems
  • Age
  • Disease or Illness

But the reasons why people want to become parents are usually the same. They want to raise a child. This is a basic need that most people feel at some point during their lives. For some people it is very easy, but for others, it is not. Even if you are able to conceive naturally, there may be still be problems along the way. It is important to visit a doctor if you are having difficulty conceiving. Knowing that other methods exist should give you hope that even if you cannot conceive the old-fashioned way, you will still be able to have a child.

THE TRADITIONAL WAY

The traditional way to become pregnant is through sexual activity. The sperm from the man is released during ejaculation into the woman. The sperm will travel through the fallopian tubes until they reach an egg. The sperm will then try to penetrate the egg. It will only takes one sperm in order to complete conception. Once the sperm has fertilized the egg, genetic information is released and cells within the egg form and begin to multiply very quickly.

It usually takes nine months for a baby to be born. While there are always exceptions, most babies will take nine months or slightly longer to grow.

Some women can conceive very easily, while other women will take longer. This has to do mainly with timing. Since there is only a one day window during which women can conceive each month, it is possible to miss this window very easily. You best chances are right before ovulation and during in order to fertilize the egg. You should be able to plan this fairly easily unless you have an erratic menstrual cycle.

Before deciding to conceive, you should visit your gynecologist for a routine check-up. This is just to make sure that you are in good health. You should also begin charting your temperature using a basal thermometer. Begin this routine on the first day of your cycle. You will notice that your temperature will be slightly lower when your estrogen levels begin to rise. This means that your period will be arriving shortly. This is the best time to conceive. You can also buy an ovulation predictor kit if to tell you when the best time to conceive will be. But, these can be expensive, so if you use your chart, you should be fine.

If you are still having difficulty, you should continue your chart for three months and then consider visiting a fertility specialist. Give them your chart as it will be helpful. The fertility specialist will run tests on both you and your spouse to see if there are any health concerns.

Sometimes, you may need to keep trying, especially if you are over the age of thirty-five. If have gone six months or more without conceiving, then you may want to consider other alternatives.

IN VITRO FERTILIZATION

If you are having problems conceiving a child, you may want to try another method such as in vitro fertilization. This is a process that takes sperm from the father and eggs from the mother and puts them together to see if the egg will become fertilized. Then eggs are then returned to the mother and a two-week waiting game begins to see if the eggs have begun to grow and if they attached themselves to the uterine wall.

This process seems simple, but the planning stages before fertilization can take months. The mother will be put on prenatal vitamins and fertility drugs so that her eggs will be ready to receive the sperm. During a small procedure that eggs are extracted and fertilized. They are put back during another small procedure.

If the in vitro fertilization works, then a pregnancy test will reveal higher levels of HCL that are used to determine pregnancy. Another test will be given two weeks after that just to make sure.

This procedure can be very expensive especially if it has to be done more than once. In vitro fertilization only has up to a 50% success rate.

If you want to try this method, you should be prepared for anything. Some parents end up with twins or triplets because of the number of eggs that become fertilized once they have been placed in the uterus. You should try to keep your stress levels as low as possible because it is not known how much stress plays in the role of conception. You should follow the doctor’s instructions and take all of the fertility drugs given when they are given. This will increase your chances of conception.

But, as the years pass, there will be more advances in this procedure that will make it easier for people to conceive.

SURROGATE AND GESTATIONAL METHODS

If you have suffered from medical issues and cannot carry a baby to term, then in vitro fertilization methods will not be effective. But there are other ways that you can still produce a child. Surrogate and gestational methods are a way for you to have child by letting another woman carry it until it is born.

Surrogacy

If you are unable to produce eggs, then you will need to find a surrogate who will supply the eggs that will be fertilized by the father’s sperm. The surrogate will carry the child until it is bor. This procedure is done by artificially inseminating the surrogate with sperm from the father.

If you are considering surrogacy, you will have to carefully consider who you would want to carry your child. Many people choose close relatives so that the babies DNA will be similar. If close relatives are not available, then close friends may be chosen.

Finding the right woman for this very important task may not be easy. Women carrying the child may become attached and may not want to give the child away. For many, however, surrogacy has been a dream come true for those who could not conceive on their own.

Gestational

If you have medical issues concerning your uterus or your health in general and cannot carry a child of your own, you can opt for the gestational method. This method is similar to surrogacy, but uses eggs from your body instead of the woman carrying the baby. The sperm and egg are fertilized and inserted into the surrogate.

The same precautions apply to the gestational method as to the surrogacy method, but many people are very satisfied with the results.

ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION AND EGG DONATION

Artificial insemination requires the use of using donated sperm to fertilize the egg. This method is very common and has a high success rate. Egg donation is similar except that an egg is either inserted into a woman first before fertilization or it is fertilized with sperm and then inserted into the uterus.

EMOTIONAL READINESS

Sometimes conceiving a child means being emotionally ready to handle being pregnant. While it is unknown how much stress affects your chances of conceiving, it is safe to eliminate stress as much as possible especially if you are trying to become pregnant.

There are ways to help the body reduce stress and become healthy enough to carry a child which include the following:

  • Get enough sleep

  • Get enough sunlight exposure during the day

  • Get enough exercise

  • Eat healthy foods

  • Cut out smoking, caffeine, alcoholic beverages

  • Stay organized

  • Spend time with family and friends

  • Participate in relaxing hobbies

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Set goals for the future

Reducing stress may not solve your infertility problems, but it will improve your outlook on the situation and help your body prepare itself for new life.

What is most ironic about stress when you are trying to become pregnant is that the stress is mostly from trying to become pregnant. You will need to let go of those feelings of anxiety and hope for the best. Many people do not conceive on their first try. It may take a few months depending on your age, overall heath, and the health of your partner.

Taking prenatal drugs may also raise your anxiety levels and cause depression or added stress. You should find ways to release this stress by taking frequent walks, or amercing yourself in a new activity.

PLANNING TO GET PREGNANT

Now that you understand some of the alternatives to conceiving a child, you will be better able to prepare yourself for pregnancy and the possible bumps in the road that may occur. After you have visited the doctor and receive a clean bill of health, you should:

  • Begin taking prenatal vitamins which will increase your chances of conceiving.

  • Quit smoking or drinking alcohol. Cut back on your caffeine intake as well.

  • Make sure you have an adequate insurance plan that will cover all the costs associated with childbirth.

  • Have your partner visit their doctor for a check-up.

  • Look over your financials to make sure you can afford a new baby.

  • Consider how much your life will change after the baby is born and if you are ready for that.

  • Visit friends and family that have children to see if this is really what you want.

Once you have prepared yourself emotionally and physically for a new baby, you are ready to conceive. Remember that it may take more than one try and could take several months or up to a year. Do not get discouraged. If, after a few months you have not conceived, then you should visit your doctor again to find out possible causes for the pregnancy not occurring.

DEALING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT

If you have tried to conceive a child, but it has been over a year, then you may begin to feel discouraged, depressed, anxious, and stressed. While it is normal to feel this way, you should not let your emotions get the best of you. It is emotions like anxiety that change the hormone levels in your body. This could be one of the reasons why you are having trouble conceiving. In order to reduce this stress, you should:

  • Try to remain positive

  • Visit your doctor

  • Focus on other events in your life

  • Spend more time with your partner, friends, and family

  • Talk to someone about your feelings of disappointment

Overcoming this stress will allow you to find other ways to conceive a child.
