Traditional surrogacy is the process of artificial insemination. In this case, the gestational carrier will use her own eggs and another man’s sperm in order to conceive a child. Earlier, couple who wanted to bear a child with the help of a surrogate mother had no other option but to make use of traditional method of surrogacy.
Medical practitioners, depend on the quality of the sperm, would then either perform an intrauterine or cervical insemination. In this case, gestational carriers are not prescribed any special medication. But, they are required to keep track of their menstrual cycle as well as the time when they ovulate. The doctors would perform the insemination around the time of the ovulation.
However, the flip side of this process is that since the surrogate uses her own eggs, a genetic link is established between her and the newborn child. This fact may not be acceptable to many couples. There have been several cases where the gestational carrier have refused to give up the child.
Gestational surrogacy is the condition where the fertilized eggs are taken from a woman’s womb and implanted in the uterus of the gestational carrier. This method of gestational surrogacy is quite expensive. According to doctors, it even follows a complicated medical procedure. The parents however, tend to prefer gestational surrogacy because the child is their own biological child.
In this case, doctors use in vitro fertilization (IVF) method. With the help of this method, the medical practitioners are able to fertilize the eggs in the woman’s womb. The embryos are them transferred into the uterus of the surrogate mother. The surrogate meanwhile, has to take daily injections to suppress the process of ovulation taking place in her own body. She is also given estrogen patches until after the embryos have been successfully transferred. By this time, say doctors, the surrogate’s body learns that it is pregnant and starts functioning accordingly. While taking the medication, the surrogate mother is likely to go through the usual symptoms of pregnancy such as drowsiness, hot flushes, headaches as well as mood swings.
