Normal Menstrual Cycle

A menstrual cycle is the cycle of changes that takes place in the ovaries as well as the lining of the uterus, called ‘endometrium’, every month. In this process, the woman’s body produces an egg, which is kept inside a follicle. If the follicle breaks, the egg gets fertilized, thereby impregnating the woman. But if the follicle does not break, then a part of the endometrium is discarded by the body. This process is referred to as ‘menstruation’ or the ‘menstrual cycle’. The menstrual cycle occurs after every 28 days.

A normal menstrual cycle occurs after every 28 days. This can vary between 26-30 days. Therefore, a woman who has a 28-day menstrual cycle will have periods every four weeks, but a woman with a shorter menstrual cycle might start her periods somewhat early. The periods may last between 4-5 days.

The first menstrual cycle, also known as menarche,  may start at the age of 11-13. These continue till the woman reaches the age group of 45-55.
